The Weary Struggle of S. Rutherford

October 1, 2006

At my first coming here I took dorts” at Christ and would forsooth, summon him for unkindness. I sought a plea of my Lord and was tossed with challenges whether he loved me or not, and disputed all over again all that he had done to me, because his word was a fire shut up in my bowels, and I was weary with forebearing, because I said I was cast out of the Lord’’s inheritance. But now I see that I was a fool. My Lord miskent* all and did bear with my foolish jealousies, and miskent* that I ever wronged His love.[Samuel Rutherford]

Hastening Home

July 8, 2006

"Well, I will tell you the reason. I'm near the end of my race, hastening home, and I am as glad of it as a schoolboy when sent home from the school to his father's house. In a few days, I will sicken and die, In my sickness I will be much out of ease to speak of anything, but I desire that you maybe with me as much as you can and you shall see that all shall end well." [Alex Henderson when near death and someone asked him why he was so cheerful]

The Last Adversary

July 8, 2006

"I am now conflicting with my last adversary, though I believe the sting is taken out. Nature will struggle, but I humbly submit to the good pleasure of God, I hardly beg the pardon of my many sins, especially for the lack of hard work. Unfaithfulness in my public and private duties, hoping to be washed with Christ's blood, and desiring to be translated out of this restless condition. I expect daily, yeah hourly, to be translated into that everlasting rest, which God has prepared for those who are in Christ, and So I pray that God would bless you and His entire ministry everywhere."

He was amongst the Westminster divines who were responsible for the WCF. A Westminster Bibliography

Beware of strange Leaven

July 8, 2006

"I counsel you to beware of the new and strange leaven of men's inventions, beside and against the word of God, contrary to the oath of this kirk now coming among you I instruct you of the superstition and idolatry of kneeling in the instant or receiving the Lord's supper, and crossing in baptism, and of the obeying of men's days use without any warrant for Christ the perfect Lawgiver. Countenance not surplice the attire of the mass priest the garment of baal's priests. The abominable bowing to alters of tree is coming upon you. Hate and keep yourself from idols. For bear in any case to hear the reading of the new fatherless service book full of gross heresy, popish and superstitious errors, without any warrant from Christ tending to overthrow of preaching. You owe no obedience to the bastard cannons; they are unlawful blasphemous and superstitious. All the ceremonies that lie in Anti-christ's foul womb waves of that great mother of fornication the kirk of Rome, are to be refused" [Samuel Rutherford]
