Solitude

September 30, 2006

Solitude
WHEN you have tidied all things for the night,
And while your thoughts are fading to their sleep,
You'll pause a moment in the late firelight,
Too sorrowful to weep.

The large and gentle furniture has stood
In sympathetic silence all the day
With that old kindness of domestic wood;
Nevertheless the haunted room will say:
"Someone must be away."

The little dog rolls over half awake,
Stretches his paws, yawns, looking up at you,
Wags his tail very slightly for your sake,
That you may feel he is unhappy too.
A distant engine whistles, or the floor
Creaks, or the wandering night-wind bangs a door
Silence is scattered like a broken glass.
The minutes prick their ears and run about,
Then one by one subside again and pass
Sedately in, monotonously out.

You bend your head and wipe away a tear.
Solitude walks one heavy step more near.

Where was God?

September 29, 2006

You often hear when disaster strikes people say "Where was God?" I heard this uttered more than once for instance over Sept 11 2001.  This quote from Johannes G. Vos commentary on the Larger Catechism seems appropriate in that light.

Q: Is Christ reigning over the nations of the world today?

A: Yes. While it is true that the nations of the world are living in neglect of, or in rebellion against, Christ’s kingly reign, still he is reigning over them and accomplishing His purposes in spite of their neglect or rebellion.

When men commit sin they are the devil’s servents; when they plead for it they are the devil’s attorneys, and he will give them a fee.[Thomas Watson]

On The Trinity

September 27, 2006

Q: What is meant by affirming Christ is the Eternal Son of God?

A: By affirming that Christ is the Eternal Son of God, we mean that he has always been the Son of God, the Second Person of the Divine Trinity from all eternity. He did not become the Son of God when he became man nor at any time in history of the created universe.

Q: Whatr is meant by affirming that Christ is one substance with the Father?

A: By affirming that Christ is of one substances with the Father, we mean that her is only one God, and Jesus Christ is this one God just  as truly as the Father is this one God. As Christians we do not believe in three God’s, but in one God who exists in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ is therfore notlike God; he is God, the only God that ther is. In Him dwells not a p art of the fullness of the Godhead bodily, but all the fullness of the Godhead bodily (col 2:9)

Q: What is mean by affirming that Christ is equal with the Father?

A: By affirmng that Christ is equal with the Father, we mean that so far as his nature is concerned, Christ is not subordinate to the Father in any way. By rason of his self-humilation, during his life on earth, he was subordinate to the Father in position, for he took upon him the form of a servant. But in nature, even during his life on earth, he was, and is today, fully equal with God the Father. [Johannes G. Vos]

Quote of the Day

On God's Election and Predestination:

Whom Christ has mercy on, He calls. If He had so willed He would have made devoted men out of careless; But God calls whom He condescends to call, and make religous whom He will. [Ambrose]
